Tunisia tremors felt in Jordan
Amman, January 28
Thousands of Jordanians demonstrated peacefully in Amman and other cities after weekly prayers today to press for political and economic reform, and demanding that the government resign. “Egypt, the Arab nation salutes you. We urge your men to get rid of (President Hosni) Mubarak,” an estimated 3,000 people chanted as they marched in Amman city centre holding national flags.

The police on Friday claimed to have recovered currencies worth over Rs 6 crore from the Karmapa monastery. They continued to search the monastery for the second day today. The police action followed recovery of cash worth Rs one crore from a vehicle during a routine check in Una on the Republic Day.

Rao to take up fishermen killings with Lanka
New Delhi, January 28
With the killings of two Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan maritime waters yet again becoming an emotive issue in the election-bound Tamil Nadu, the government is rushing Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao to Colombo to impress on the Lankan authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that that such incidents don’t recur.Rao will leave here on Sunday and hold talks with Sri Lankan leaders on Monday, senior Indian officials said today.Reflecting the political sensitivities in Tamil Nadu, India has already reacted very strongly to the two incidents of killings of Indian fishermen during this month.

Roads in the country will soon receive ‘stars’, like hotels, indicating how safe they are. While the safest roads will get five stars, one star will be awarded to high-risk roads. More than 300 people die in road accidents on the world’s third-largest road network every day. Road accidents are now a ‘global killer’ on the scale of malaria or tuberculosis and are the main cause of death for young people between the ages of 10 and 24.
