The much-discussed and long-awaited Cabinet reshuffle undertaken by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today turned out to be a disappointing affair. Contrary to prior indications that the Prime Minister and Congress president Sonia Gandhi would use this opportunity to restore the government's lost credibility by showing the door to non-performers and those involved in controversies, no minister was dropped.

SC: Govt should target black money hoarders
New Delhi, January 19
The Supreme Court today directed the Central Government to target all those who had “plundered the nation” and stashed away “mind-boggling” amounts of black money in secret bank accounts in Switzerland and other tax havens, without restricting the investigations to a few individuals or to merely unearth tax evasion. A Bench comprising Justices B Sudershan Reddy and SS Nijjar asked Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium that the investigations being conducted in the wake of PILs filed in the SC on the issue should go beyond mere recovery of the tax that had been evaded.

PM: No quick fix to bring it back

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said there was “no instant solution” to bring back black money stashed in foreign banks and that information with the government could not be made public due to treaty obligations.

Sale of Uranium
Oz turns down India’s request 
Melbourne, January 19
Refusing to budge from its policy, Australia today rejected India’s request for the sale of uranium. “Regarding the export of uranium to India, the policy of the Australian government is clear - we will only supply uranium to countries that are signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and have signed a bilateral agreement with Australia,” Australia’s Resource, Energy and Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson said after his meeting with visiting External Affairs Minister SM Krishna.

Kalmadi’s key aide Jayachandran gets bail 
New Delhi, January 19
CWG Organising Committee official M Jayachandran, arrested for alleged financial bunglings in holding Queen Baton's Relay (QBR) in London in 2009, was today granted bail by the Delhi High Court. Justice Hima Kohli granted bail to Jayachandran, a key aide of the Commonwealth Games OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, following the CBI's failure to wind up the probe and file the charge sheet in the case within the stipulated 60-day period.

Chidambaram asks Buddha to rein in armed cadres
New Delhi, January 19
Appeasing UPA partner Trinamool Congress (TMC), Union Home Minister P Chidambaram today pulled up West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the Netai killings. After an open war of words and angry defiance last couple of weeks, Buddhadeb arrived here on summons from the Home Minister and met him and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also giving them a memorandum on the “open and public association with the Maoists”.
