Bizarre gunshot kills Balram Jakhar’s son
Abohar, January 17
Surinder Kumar JakharSurinder Kumar Jakhar, Chairman of Indian Farmers Fertilizers Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) and son of former Speaker of the Lok Sabha Balram Jakhar, died today after a bullet hit him in the head when his pistol, which he was cleaning at his farmhouse located at Maujgarh, about 20 km from here, went off accidentally.

Government defends Thomas’ appointment
New Delhi, January 17
The Centre today strongly defended the appointment of controversial bureaucrat PJ Thomas, facing a corruption case in a Kerala court, as Central Vigilance Commissioner, saying he was an “outstanding officer” with “impeccable integrity”. In an affidavit in the Supreme Court cleared by Attorney General GE Vahanvati, the government also said there was no need for “consensus” of the three-member high powered committee on CVC's appointment.

Probe to find if missing files hit IAF deal 
New Delhi, January 17
A high-level probe has been initiated by the Ministry of Defence to find out whether mishandling of a sensitive file could have vitiated a proposed $ 11 billion fighter aircraft deal for the IAF. Sources termed the Defence Ministry probe as “comprehensive” and will be conducted by an additional secretary-rank official. He is expected to submit his findings to the Defence minister AK Antony by the month-end, sources said today.

Near-miss for Rahman

Oscar winning Indian musician AR Rahman lost out the Golden Globe in the Original Score category to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who won for their music in ‘The Social Network’. The 45-year-old musician was up for his second Golden Globe for the Danny Boyle film ‘127 Hours’ and had just a day earlier bagged the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics’ Choice Awards for his number ‘If I Rise’ from the film.

UK: Wanted Verma’s immunity waiver, India declined
New Delhi/London, Jan 17
Even as India has transferred its London-based diplomat Anil Verma, Britain today disclosed that it had pressed for Anil Verma Verma's diplomatic immunity to be waived but that was declined by the government. With the British office demanding waiving diplomatic immunity of the diplomat or his transfer from London and action against him under Indian laws, India chose the second option, sources said. In London, a Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson said, "We can confirm that we have formally requested the waiver of diplomatic immunity for a diplomat posted at the Indian High Commission in London.
