In a move that would further roil the public mood in the country already reeling under the burden of runaway inflation, public sector oil companies increased the price of petrol by Rs 2.50-2.54 per litre, the second time in a month following the rise in global crude oil prices.

Giving further boost to the Congress’ no-holds-barred attack on the Comptroller and Auditor General, UPA sources now say some MPs may move privilege motion against the government auditor on his recent statement. “The MPs are examining the possibility whether the CAG’s recent statement amounts to contempt of the House,” they say.

Already in the dock for the lowest gender ratio and honour killings perpetuated by the khap panchayats, Haryana is now displaying acute official apathy towards female literacy, a cause which the UPA Government espoused in September 2009 when the Prime Minister launched the Sakshar Bharat Mission to educate 60 million illiterate women (and 10 million illiterate men) across India by March 31, 2012.
