CVC Thomas may face trial in palm oil scam

Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) PJ Thomas, who is facing PILs in the Supreme Court seeking his removal, may now have to stand trial in a corruption case in a Kerala court, making his continuance in office even more uncertain.

PM discusses ways to tame inflation
New Delhi, January 11
A worried Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today held a meeting with senior ministers and bureaucrats to find ways to tame food inflation. The high-level meeting, however, ended inconclusively. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrasekhar, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Economic Adviser to the Finance Ministry Kaushik Basu attended the two-hour meeting at the Prime Minister’s 7, Race Course Road residence.

Threat to Indian mission in Kabul real: Krishna
New Delhi, January 11
Describing the situation in Afghanistan as ‘very disturbing’, the External Affairs Minister S M Krishna today said the threats of fresh terror attacks on the Indian Embassy in the capital city of Kabul were real. Interacting with visiting journalists from Eastern Europe, Krishna, who has just returned from a visit to Kabul, said “I did talk about the threat to our embassy and consular offices recently. The threats are real and some of the attacks were successful, some others were thwarted. We have lost many precious lives in Kabul because of these assaults.”
