The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas ended here today, but not before the participants were sharply reminded of their poor record in investing in the country of their origin: Remittances from overseas Indians have grown over the years, but their share in foreign direct investment (FDI) remains poor, a little over 1 per cent of the total FDI.

Ganguly finds no takers in IPL 4

The IPL auction concluded here today with a few surprises and jackpots for some. Big names like Sourav Ganguly and Chris Gayle failed to attract any buyers for the second day running and will be out of the IPL. Little-known Australian Daniel Christian was the biggest gainer of the second day with Deccan Chargers buying him out for Rs 4.14 crores.

Get tough on criminals in politics: CEC to govt

The Election Commission wants the government and Parliament to “revisit” the issue of criminalisation of politics and take urgent steps to bar candidates facing serious charges of murder, rape and extortion from contesting elections. The commission also favours disqualification of incumbent MPs and MLAs on conviction in cases involving serious charges.

ULFA top gun in China: Top leader

Paresh Baruah, the military chief of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), seems to be enjoying hospitality in China as his presence in the neighbouring country has been confirmed by the arrested head of a Manipuri militant group. United National Liberation Front (UNLF) chief R K Sanayaima, alias Meghen, arrested last month in Bihar by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), confessed during interrogation that he had met the elusive 'commander-in-chief' of ULFA during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
