New Delhi, January 8
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today announced the government’s decision to merge the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and the Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards into a single facility to further simplify procedures for visa-free travel by the Indian diaspora and participate in business and educational activities in the country of their origin.

The BJP today slammed Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal for his stand that there was no loss at all on account of the controversial 2G Spectrum allocation after debunking CAG estimates of a Rs 1.76 lakh crore loss. The party also criticised the Prime Minister’s “stubborn opposition” to the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the scam.

2-member panel to probe Adarsh scam
Mumbai, January 8
A two-member committee, headed by a retired judge, will probe the Adarsh Housing Society scam, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said here today. The two-member panel comprising former Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court JA Patil and retired Chief Secretary P Subramaniam has the mandate to look into all aspects of the project, including land ownership, allotment, permissions and environmental violations.

The week-end auction of cricketers for the Indian Premeir League, which will continue on Sunday, got off to a blazing start with Kolkata Knight Riders grabbing Gautam Gambhir for a whopping Rs 11.8 crore for the next two years. While Gambhir was the first cricketer to breach the $2million barrier, by the end of the day, three more players joined him in the elite league. They were Yusuf Pathan, Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa.
