Chandigarh colder than Srinagar
Tribune News Service & PTI

Jalandhar, January 5
Chandigarh recorded its coldest day ever today, making it colder than Srinagar and Shimla, as piercing chill continued to sweep Punjab and Haryana.

Several places in the region were under a thick fog cover that hit movement of flights and affected vehicular traffic and trains. Icy winds sent the maximum temperature in Chandigarh plummeting to 7.4°Celsius, down by a record 14° below normal.

“Never before in Chandigarh's history has there been such a cold day. Earlier on January 12, the maximum here recorded was 8°C,” said a MeT official here.

The city was colder than Srinagar in Kashmir which today recorded maximum temperature of 7.5°C and Shimla at high of 12.9°C, the MeT said here.

The bone-biting cold threw life completely out of gear in several places of Punjab as traffic was reduced to a snail's pace in most parts of the state.

“The general visibility was less than 100m till early morning hours,” India Meteorological Department director, Surender Paul, said.

Throughout the day, people remained huddled around bonfires. It has been five days since the region has been reeling under freezing cold with thick mist and haze during the morning and evening hours.

The mercury sharply declined in Adampur making it the coldest among the plains with a shivering low of 1.7° C. The minimum temperature at Adampur was recorded at 8°C yesterday.

Amritsar too witnessed extreme chill as the minimum temperature dipped to 1.8°C as compared to 8.6° C yesterday. Halwara saw a low of 1.9° Celsius. Among other places, Bathinda in the Malwa belt witnessed a low of 2.7°C.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8°C. In Jammu and Kashmir, Udhampur saw a freezing low of 0.3°C while Jammu recorded a minimum of 3°C.

The Met department at Adampur Air Force station has predicted a mainly overcast to cloudy sky with possibility of dense fog in the morning and evening hours during the next
24 hours.

“The people can expect some relief from severe cold by Saturday...there is nothing unusual in the current spell of cold as in previous years too such conditions have persisted,” said a weather official.
