Mughal tradition comes alive

Kalka, December 18
On the second day of the Heritage Festival at Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, thousands of visitors and tourists enjoyed the festival.Performances like puppet show, Rajasthani kachi ghori, traditional Haryanavi orchestra, Haryanavi folk dances were the main attractions.

It was a treat for eyes to watch Craft Bazaar especially crafted on the bastion of Mughal Gardens to remind people of Old Mughal traditions.

It was a shopping paradise for the visitors, who thronged these gardens.

A total of 35 craftsperson from all across the country participated. Around 12 traditional dance troupes are participating in the festival.

Around 4,000 visitors had visited the Yadavindra Gardens till the second day of the three-day festival.

OP Jain, Minister of Tourism, Hospitality, Transport and Civil Aviation, Haryana, was the chief guest.

The gardens wore a festive look and displayed its glorified past. The flavour of the floral décor was specially planned to give the entire stretch an ethnic look.

Qawwali contest

Audience was treated to “Sham-E-Qawwali Muqabla” by Ustad Yusuf Aazad and Baby Naaz.

They enthralled the crowd with their unique style of qawwali singing. Various competitions were also held.

BJP burns Rahul’s effigy

BJP Ambala unit burnt the effigy of Rahul Gandhi at Ambala city today to protest against his statement disclosed by Wikileaks in which he said the radical Hindu groups could pose a bigger threat to the country than militant groups.

The BJP workers raised slogans against the Congress. Former MP Rattan Lal Kataria, former MLAs Veena Chibber, Faquir Chand Aggarwal, Jasbir Mallore and BJP leaders Sandeep Sachdeva, Vinod Garg, Bharat Bhushan Aggarwal, and Chander Mohan Fauji were present on this occasion.

Kataria, while addressing the party workers, said Rahul had defamed the Hindu organisations and hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus. His statement had offered boost to militant groups. Kataria said the price hike in petroleum would affect the common man and the Congress had to pay heavy price for it, he added.

Protest against corruption

Representatives of the Joint Panel of Citizens and Soldiers protested at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial here this morning.The joint panel pledged to take forward the “Flame of Hope” kindled by the Supreme Court to check corruption in governance.

The panel also maintained that the nation must rise to save hard-earned sovereignty and integrity. Dr MS Randhawa and Capt CS Sidhu, co-conveners of the panel, warned the nation if it continued to remain silent on corruption issue.

Sports day at Police DAV

Police DAV Public School organised its annual sports day on Saturday. Ambala SP Shashank Anand was the chief guest on the occasion.

Various events like flag race, lemon race, banana race, yoga and aerobics were organised. Students also presented a colourful cultural programme. The chief guest urged students to take part in co-curricular activities. Principal of the school Vikas Kohli and others addressed students.

4 booked in forgery case

Zirakpur, December 18
The police today booked four persons in a forgery case on the complaint of Harpal Singh Sodhi, a resident of Kalgidhar Enclave, Baltana.The accused have been identified as Balbir Singh, Jasmeet Singh, both residents of Sector 16, Panchkula, Devta Din Yadav, a resident of Colony no. 4, Chandigarh, and Bal Chand, a resident of Indira Colony.

The police had arrested Balbir Singh, Jasmeet Singh and Devta Din Yadav, while Bal Chand managed to flee.

The investigating officer stated that in his complaint Harpal Singh Sodhi alleged that a few days ago his relative Shalinder Singh, a resident of Jarnail Enclave, told him that four property dealers had come to his house and talked about sale of disputed land around 4 kila 13 biswae for Rs 1 crore per kila at Nabha village.

The officer said the accused told Harpal Singh and his relative that the land was on the name of Bhupinder Singh, a resident of Mansa.

They represented Jasmeet Singh as Bhupinder, 60-year-old. They had shown his fake voter identity card of Mansa district and other fake documents related to the land.

Later, Harpal had verified the land and visited Nabha village, along with his relative, where they met Harbhajan Singh, a resident of Nabha village, who told him that the land belonged to Bhupinder Singh (19), a resident of Mani Majra, whose grand father was a resident of Nabha village, the officer added.

Suspecting some foul Harpal informed the police.

Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj said after receiving a complaint from Harpal Singh Sodhi, a case under Sections 420, 465, 467, 468, 511 and 120 of the IPC had been registered. “We have arrested three accused and will produce them in a local court tomorrow,” said the SHO.

Two duped of Rs 14.5 lakh

Mohali: Two persons were allegedly cheated of ` 14.50 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad.

According to the police, Sohan Singh, a resident of Behlolpur village, in Karnal district, said a sum of Rs 9 lakh was taken from him by Kulwinder Singh Cheema, an agent of Fatehgarh Sahib, for sending him to Canada.

He was neither sent abroad and nor was the money returned to him.

In another case Harjit Singh, a resident of Patiala, had complained to the police that a sum of ` 5.50 lakh was taken from him by Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Phase II, Mohali, for sending him to Spain. But the work was not done by him and the money was also not returned.

The police has registered cases under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in this regard. 

700 boxes of liquor seized

Mohali: The Sohana police has seized 700 boxes of liquor which were illegally being transported from Chandigarh and arrested the truck driver.

According to reports, the police had laid a naka near Bari village and on suspicion stopped a truck. While searching the vehicle, the police found that 700 boxes of liquor, which could be sold only in Chandigarh, were being illegally transported. The driver of the truck, Jasbir Singh, a resident of Shadipur village of Kaithal district, was arrested by the police. A case under the Excise Act was registered in this regard.

Chain snatched in Sector 46

Two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths snatched a gold chain from a Patiala resident in the Sector 46 residential area here today.The victim, Jaspal Kaur, had come to the city from Patiala to meet her relative and was buying peanuts from a rehri when two youths intercepted her near House Number 3215 in Sector 46. The suspects were wearing helmets and she failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

Before she could react, the youth riding pillion on the bike pulled her gold chain. She raised an alarm, but the suspects managed to flee. The police reached the spot and recorded her statement.

A case under Sections 356 and 379 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Darryl (80 off 46) helped South Africa register a 10-run win over BTS Cricket Academy, Sector 48, in the South Africa Series (U-17) here today.South Africa piled up 251 for 8 in 30 overs. Darryl hit valuable 80 runs. He was ably supported by Kevin, who made 57 runs off 52 balls.

For BTS, Avish took three wickets, conceding 52 runs, whereas Parvesh claimed 2 for 65.

In reply, BTS team were all out on 241 in 28 overs. South Africa’s Anieo took three wickets for 38 runs.

CCA-19 beat Millennium

Chandigarh Cricket Academy (CCA), Sector 19, beat Millennium Cricket Academy, Mohali, by 86 runs in a Pool A match of the Haier Cup Cricket Tournament, being organised by Chandigarh Cricket Academy at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, here today.

Electing to bat first, CCA team scored 139 runs in 30 overs.In reply, Millennium was restricted at 52 all out in 20 overs.

Earlier, CCA opener Sagar Sharma provided a good start with his 32 runs, whereas Treyaksh Bali scored 24 runs. For Millennium team, Aman took two wickets for 15 runs.

Anmol was the maximum wicket taker with three for 20.

A terrific bowling spell by Rahul enabled CCA to dismiss Millennium for 52 runs.

Besides, Rahul, Sandeep and Raman also bowled well to pick two wickets each.

Earlier, Punjab and Haryana Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal inaugurated the match.

Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 20, and Khalsa College, Sector 26, won their respective matches in the women section on the opening day of the 7th Challanger Kho-Kho Championship at MDAV School, Sector 22, here today.

GMSSS-20 beat Government College for Girls, Sector 42, in a nail biting contest by a margin of one point (9-8), Khalsa College got the better of Dev Samaj Club by 8-6.

Earlier, UT Mayor Anu Chatrath inaugurated the tournament.
