“There is a time to be quiet and there is a time to talk. People must work in unison. Only then can we achieve our goal,” Aung San Suu Kyi told supporters at the gates of her lakeside home on Saturday after being released from detention. Indications that she would be released were available when the troops removed the barricades and moved away earlier during the day.

It will be several years before the country overcomes the acute shortage of police (Indian Police Service ) officers. In January this year the Parliament was informed that as on January 1, there was a shortage of 630 IPS officers and the annual intake was being increased by 60 additional heads to meet the shortage. But that is clearly not enough.

Reality TV under scanner after Rakhi’s ‘insaaf’

The death of a contestant, allegedly from acute depression after being called “impotent” by host Rakhi Sawant on her show ‘Rakhi ka Insaaf’, has put the spotlight on reality shows on Indian channels and the role of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in overseeing what is being dished out to unsuspecting viewers in the name of reality TV.

Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has a new agenda and that is to get diesel-guzzling luxury and the Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) off Indian roads. Diesel cars in the luxury segment let out high carbon emissions and their use in a country like India is “criminal”, Ramesh said, suggesting a reformed diesel policy as real beneficiaries of the subsidy were not farmers but owners of “BMWs, Benzs and Hondas”.

Lobbying on to save part of Adarsh society
