India assuages US concerns on N-deal

Barely days before US President Barack Obama arrives here, India today signed the Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC) at the IAEA in Vienna that will enable the country to undertake nuclear commerce.

India and Malaysia on Wednesday agreed to forge new ties on two of the most important issues for their economies- sealing the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and contain the threat of terrorism through establishment of a Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, besides collaboration in defence.

RBI to study Malaysia’s Islamic banking model
Kuala Lumpur, October 27
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said that he would ask the Reserve Bank of India to look into Islamic banking practices in Malaysia. The Indian government has received several requests from Islamic banks in West Asia to start this system on an experimental basis.

Geelani slapped Rs 1.73 cr tax bill
He had shown an annual income of Rs 17,100 but the dept’s assessment put his monthly expenditure at Rs 1-Rs 1.5 lakh

The income tax department has asked hardline Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani to file Rs 1.73 crore in tax dues over a period when he had not filed his returns. Geelani, who heads the breakaway faction of Hurriyat Conference, has still the option to go to the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT).

Two naval bases okayed in Orissa, Tamil Nadu

In an apparent bid to counter China’s growing presence in the Bay of Bengal, especially its new forays in Bangladesh and Myanmar, the Indian Government has okayed two new naval bases on the Eastern sea board - Paradip and Tuticorin in Orissa and Tamil Nadu, respectively.
