Girl power in agriculture
Perform, learn and enjoy
Campus Notes

Girl power in agriculture SINCE the beginning of the civilisation, women have been playing a great role in the agricultural field as a farmer and agricultural labourer. According to a noted agricultural scientist and father of Green Revolution, Dr M.S. Swaminathan, many historians believe that woman was the first cultivator of a crop on the land. The role of women in agriculture remained under shadow for centuries as a silent worker. But their role saw a change after Independence with the establishment of separate agricultural universities in our country, particularly after 1962. Now, we have 45 agricultural, horticulture and veterinary universities, which have brought the women to the forefront of agriculture as an administrator, officer, researcher and entrepreneur. In the beginning, girls were not so keen to make a career in this field. Till 1980, their enrolment was less than 5 per cent in most of the agricultural universities. In the next two decades, the enrolment of girls picked up steadily. In 1995-96, the enrolment of girls in agricultural institutions was 14.3 per cent, which further increased to 17.4 per cent in 2000-01. Now, the overall enrolment of girl students has reached 36 per cent in our country. The surge of woman power really became visible in the last ten years, as the girls have outnumbered boys in agricultural education in states like Himachal Pradesh and Kerala. In Himachal Pradesh, there are two universities in agriculture and horticulture. Both the universities had less than 10 per cent of girl students till 1990 in different disciplines of agriculture. However, the real upswing came after 2000. In 2004-05, there were 43 per cent girl students at Choudhary Sarwan Kumar H.P. Krishi Vishwavidyalya, Palampur and their number rose to 54 per cent in 2010. The characteristic feature of this trend is that enrolment of girls consistently increased over these years and in 2010 alone 67 per cent of the fresh enrolments are of girls. A similar trend has been observed at Dr Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni. The university had 32 per cent strength of girl students in 2004-05, which increased to 48 per cent in 2009-10. In 2010, 54 per cent girls have enrolled in different undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The influx of girls in agriculture has certainly provided them better career opportunities in this field. The girl alumni of these two universities are donning important responsibilities in the Indian Forest Services, All-India Agricultural Research Services as scientists in universities in the state and other states, officers in state Department of Agriculture and Horticulture and also in the private sector. Higher enrolment of girls in agriculture education is really the reflection of higher literacy rate of 67.4 per cent of women in the state. Literacy of women in general is certainly having an impact on the ability of the women to choose diversified fields. The role of literacy in such changes is also visible in the most literate state Kerala, where out of 2,000 students in Kerala Agricultural University, 60 per cent are girls. In contrast, Orissa may have lower literacy rate among women but Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology has registered an upward trend in girls’ enrolment in agricultural subjects which increased from 37 per cent in 1993-94 to 58 per cent in 2009-10. Similarly, in veterinary and animal husbandry, it increased from 7.6 per cent in 1994-95 to 37.3 per cent in 2009-10. This change is very significant as the enrolment of girl students in the prestigious Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa, New Delhi, is still 18 per cent, while Anand Agricultural University in Gujarat is having 25 per cent girl students. Such change of women power is significant in the crucial farming sector of our economy and more important for the state of Himachal Pradesh, which has shown the way for the country to follow. Perform, learn and enjoy DO to discover rather than hear to believe” is the recent motto set by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the schools affiliated to it. The board has stressed upon the schools to replace the old talk-and-teach style in science with demonstrative activities, working models and regular practical classes. Not only that, it is also planning to reduce the weightage of theory papers by chopping off many bulky chapters and increase the marks of laboratory and project work. This basic objective of CBSE is indeed laudable. To achieve this objective, students should be provided with an opportunity to work with their own hands, the basis of which is experimentation. A child should learn by doing and then himself discover the process of excitement of science. An old adage says: “Tell me and I will forget; teach me, and I will understand; involve me, and I will remember.” The “hands-on” approach to involve students in scientific activities has been recognised and is being developed the world over. This is also the best way to arrest the decline in interest of students in science education, which is the main concern of our top scientific community today. An important aspect of hands-on science is that it makes teacher-student communication much easier. Questions arise spontaneously and difficulties are easy to spot and discuss simultaneously. Even a failed experiment can teach a lot to both students and teachers. This “do-it-yourself” approach nurtures curiosity and develops a critical spirit in the learner, which is the very foundation of scientific learning and discovery. The Indian Association of Physics Teachers, whose main aim is to improve teaching and learning of physics, in particular, and science, in general, realised the necessity of such an approach much earlier and established two science centers in the country called Anveshika Centres, one at Kanpur in 2001 and the other at Chandigarh in 2005. The Chandigarh centre is located at SGGS College and is being headed by Prof. M. S. Marwaha of the Physics Department, who is also the main resource person. Under the aegis of this centre, Prof. Marwaha has conducted dozens of workshops on “innovative experiments in Physics” for school principals, teachers, students and others. The workshop comprises demonstrations based on fundamental concepts/principles/laws of physics in its various branches. These are followed by hands-on activities performed by the participants themselves with help from the resource person. These demonstrations and hands-on activities have been developed using low-cost equipment. These can help comprehend the subject matter in an easy, interesting and gripping manner. The demonstrations can be shown and explained to the students when the relevant topic is discussed in the class. The students can also perform these activities in class as well as in the laboratory. The ultimate aim is to turn this pragmatic venture into a movement so that real learning of science can start from the grass-roots level. |

Earlier, in the league matches, the university team defeated HMV College, Jalandhar, 15-13; KMV College, Jalandhar, 20-18 and Hindu Kanya College, Kapurthala, 26-12. In a knockout match, the campus team also emerged winner by defeating the women’s team of SDAM College, Dinanagar, in a one-sided affair. Surabhi Pathania played a key role for the winner team. While KMV College, Jalandhar, remained runners-up, HMV College, Jalandhar, got the third position in the championship. Meanwhile, Prof. MPS Ishar, Dean, Students Welfare, and Dr H.S. Randhawa, Deputy Director, Sports, congratulated the winning teams. Lecture on Guru Nanak
and early Sikhs
Professor Gurinder Singh Mann, an eminent scholar of the Sikh studies, from the University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), delivered a thought-provoking lecture on "Guru Nanak and Early Sikhs: New Perspectives". The lecture was organised by the Department of History, Guru Nanak Dev University. Dr B.S. Dhillon from the Guru Nanak Studies Department of the university presided over. The students and faculty members of the department were also present on the occasion. Prof. Maan emphasised on the need to start afresh with new approach to our understanding of Guru Nanak and his followers in the light of extant contemporary sources. Dr Dhillon in his presidential remarks said there was need to understand the sources about Guru Nanak Bani which were known but yet to be explored to understand the philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev in its own perspectives. |
