New Delhi, September 22 The country on the whole has recorded 4% excess rains as far as long period average between June 1 and September 22 is concerned, primarily on the basis of an extremely good performance by the monsoon in the northwest region comprising Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and the South Peninsula. In fact, the South Peninsula and Northwest are topping the rain charts with 19% and 15% more rains than the normal. Even today, monsoon continued to play havoc in the north with Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh being the worst hit. Northwest recorded a surplus of 104% and east and northeast India of 21%. In the past two days widespread rainfall has occurred over Himachal, Haryana, northeast Rajasthan, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Coastal Karnataka and Lakshwadeep and fairly widespread over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, northeastern States, Gangetic West Bengal, interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Rain deficient Only some sub-divisions in the northeast and east like Jharkhand, Bihar, east UP and West Bengal have got rainfall on the deficit side. Despite floods, rainfall is still deficient in Bihar by 21%, in Jharkhand by 39%, in West Bengal 29% and Assam and Meghalaya 23%. It is also deficient in parts of Central India like Madhya Pradesh (14%), Chattisgarh (11%) and Gujarat region (15%). Uttar Pradesh east has recorded a 20% deficiency.
