Pressure on Rahman to rejig CWG theme song
Kumar Rakesh/TNS

New Delhi, September 4
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman might rejig the composition of his Commonwealth Games theme song, Yaro India Bula Liya, which has received more criticism than applause since he unveiled it a week ago.

CWG Organising Committee (OC) sources said Rahman had been told about the general disappointment his theme song had received. The ace composer, who had claimed the song would be better than Shakira’a Waka Waka, the much-acclaimed theme song for the Fifa World Cup this year, is also disappointed with the thumbs down and could go for a revamp, they said.

But it is not clear if Rahman has agreed to fine-tune the song.

OC’s general secretary Lalit Bhanot said they were going ahead with the promotion of the song and it would grow on people with time. They have also received praise for the song so it is not right to say that it has been rejected by the people, he said.

It took Rahman over six months to complete the number and with only a month remaining before the Games, many have wondered if it would be feasible for him to give the theme song a makeover.

While Rahman’s composition has been adjudged too slow to be associated with a sports’ event, its lyrics have been dismissed by many as juvenile and simplistic.

The blogosphere, which has long been a solid fan base for Rahman’s music, is buzzing with largely disapproving noises and even his ardent fans agree that the song lacks the charisma they associate with the Mozart of Madras.

Even somebody like Sukhwinder, who has rendered his voice to some of the most popular Rahman numbers, has said he should have roped in other great professionals like Gulzar rather than taking all responsibilities himself. Rahman has also lent his voice to the theme song.

Some OC members said they wanted a song with more energy and depth and had conveyed their concerns.
