From October 31, mobile users can retain their number even if they change the network
New Delhi, August 12
Mobile phone users will have access to Mobile Number Portability(MNP) with effect from October 31, announced the Telecom Regulatory Authority on Thursday. “ There will be no further delay in the implementation of MNP,” said TRAI chairman JS Sarma. MNP is a service that allows a mobile user to change his service provider or operator while retaining the number.

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry email and instant messaging services would be shut down in the country if the Canadian maker did not address Indian security concerns by August 31, the government declared here today.

India trashes Superbug report
Says nation’s hospitals safe, to lodge protest with Lancet
New Delhi, August 12
The government and health experts today slammed a new online Lancet study attributing to India the emergence of an antibiotic-resistant superbug. Reacting to the naming of the said enzyme as New Delhi Metallo beta lactamase, the Health Ministry said that the government would register an objection with Lancet.

The government today said there were no records of calls made by Home Ministry officials before the exit of former Union Carbide chief Warren Anderson’s from India in December 1984 and on the “safe passage” assurance reportedly given to him.

GoM to write to CMs on honour killings
New Delhi, August 12
A nine-member Group of Ministers (GOM), headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, today decided to write to Chief Ministers for their views on possible legal remedies to counter the pernicious practice of honour killings ordered by khap panchayats before proceeding further on this matter.

Expect heavier rain in coming days

The Indian Meteorological Bureau’s (IMB) forecast of heavy rain in the region after August 18 today prompted Punjab government to release Rs 6.49 crore for preventive flood-control measures even as Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) sought to reassure people and said there was nothing to panic about the rising level of water in the Bhakra dam.
