"The CWG Organizing Committee is scheduled to complete the work till September 15. Practice session on the track will start from September 22. All sewer, water and electricity line works have been completed. At the start point, the 1.5-km stretch has been handed over to the committee," said Singh. GAMES SECURITY
New Delhi, July 25 According to information, the Delhi police has been given a go-ahead for the procurement of three armoured vehicles before the Commonwealth Games and the security officials going to operate these vehicles are already undergoing training. While the officials refrained from disclosing the company (foreign or Indian) chosen to supply these vehicles, according to ACP Rajan Bhagat, spokesperson, Delhi police, the three vehicles would be delivered much before October 4. "It has been decided that the Delhi police would procure three vehicles and the process in this regard is on. We shall have them much before the Games. These vehicles would be manned by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and about 100 commandos who are undergoing intensive training in this regard," said Bhagat. According to him, no specific point in the Capital has been chosen to plant these vehicles. They would patrol all around, and if need be, could be stationed at any particular sports venue. According to information, all the commandos chosen for security duty on these vehicles are from the Delhi police. "Each of these vehicles would be carrying 30 commandos and we have chosen close to 100 men. While a batch of around 30 men have already undergone training, the other two batches of around 70 men would soon start training," said Bhagat, adding that training and procurement process is being done on parallel levels. Besides the use of sophisticated and automatic weapons, the commandos are also being trained in different tactics required during terrorist attacks, including biological or chemical weapons attack, hostage situation, etc. Experts say the armoured vehicles have different safety levels depending upon the level of ballistic resistance. "Different armoured vehicles have different level of ballistic resistance. For example, a particular armoured vehicle may resist .44 magnum bullets, but it may not resist the 30.06 AP (Armour Piercing) bullets. It depends upon the ballistic material used in making. There is a different category of armoured vehicles, but we cannot disclose the kind of vehicles we are procuring," said a Delhi police official. No police force in the country is presently using bullet-proof armoured cars for normal policing duties. |

Rashtrapati Bhavan gets ISO certificate for green effort
New Delhi, July 25 The day coincides with the second anniversary of "Roshni"-a march towards resource conservation reflected clearly through an array of energy-efficient set-ups put in place for rainwater harvesting, waste management, recycling of water, etc. The certification comes on the day which completes three years of President Pratibha Patil's tenure in the highest office. "At a time when development is progressing at a pace never seen earlier, the model of the Rashtrapati Bhavan would act as a catalyst for affecting a change towards building sustainable habitats," said the President. On the occasion, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit urged that the film capturing glimpses of the evolution of the Rashtrapati Bhavan into a zero-waste management model should be allowed to be telecast in various schools and offices. "Lessons derived would not only bring about a conservation culture in the masses, be it water or power, but in the course would also prevent the world from being inundated in the environmental crisis," Dikshit underlined. Calling for a change in the mindset of people, largely driven by a lifestyle that threatens co-existence of man and nature, union minister of urban development Jaipal Reddy said, "The President's Estate would serve as an oasis in the country's landscape and encourage people, especially the younger generation to adopt ways, which are environment-friendly and sustainable in the long run." Located in the heart of city, the exotic estate spread over 340 acres houses residential buildings and offices, which are demarcated as plastic-free zone and are dependent on energy-efficient modes. They have solar-lit lights and CFLs. Significantly, the resource-conservation concept and measures could not have been a success without the five self-help groups (SHGs), each comprising about eight women. A year back, SHGs named after Rani Jhansi, Mother Teresa, Indira Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu and Kalpana Chawla were initiated and women from among the residents of the President's house were trained in making envelopes along with other paper products that are used in the Rashtrapati Bhavan itself. Seventy-year-old Vimal Devi, who has been associated with the Roshni programme since its inception, says the work has enabled her to utilise her time purposefully. |

The police further stated that Golu reportedly got involved in a quarrel with some persons yesterday morning. They had threatened him with dire consequences. "A case has been registered and further investigations are on to nab the culprits," added the officer. |
Govt mulling flower, book shops near overbridges
New Delhi, July 25 The government plans to construct 80 overbridges. Thirty one of these bridges are complete while others would be completed in the near future. There have been complaints from the public that beggars and hooligans occupy the free space around overbridges which discourage them, especially women, from using it. Though authorities have evicted beggars from these places to give a good account of the Capital during the Commonwealth Games, they believe it would be difficult to maintain the situation afterwards. Allowing small flower and book shops to come up at the places could be a permanent solution to the problem. However, it is still a fledgling idea and would have to be vetted before it gets a final nod, the officials said. |
DTU general seats filled during first counselling
New Delhi, July 25 Since 85% seats are reserved for Delhi candidates, there are 959 seats available for Delhi candidates and 169 for those belonging to the region outside Delhi. Out of these, 551 seats are on offer for the Delhi (open-general) candidates. All the seats under the Delhi open category have been filled during the first counselling itself, with the last seat filling at the AIEEE All-India Rank of 11,969. University spokesperson Rashmi Sablania said, "There were 98 seats offered for the outside Delhi (open) category, which have also been filled, with the last seat filling at the rank of AIEEE All-India Rank of 3,895. The opening rank for Delhi general category seats is 1,135 and the closing rank, 11,969. The opening rank for Delhi OBC seats is 6,314 and the closing rank, 32,455. The Delhi SC opening rank was 18,978 and the closing rank, 1,04,476." At present, there are a few seats available under the SC/ST and OBC categories for the students of both Delhi and outside Delhi. However, as the university has given time till August-end to withdraw admissions, there is a strong possibility that some seats will become vacant by the second or third counselling even in the general category. There is hope for students who have not made it in the first round of counselling. The second counselling will start on August 16. Mohan Garg, a student who has made it to DTU in the first round of counselling, said, "I am thrilled that I made the score in the first round of counselling. I have opted for B.Tech. electronics and it should be a challenging course. I opted for DTU as my first choice after sitting the exam as placements at the varsity have been cent percent. Over 600 jobs were offered last year for some 400 students." Monisha Dayal, another student, said, "I have not made it in the first round of counselling and will be trying in the second round. I am keen on DTU. My sister also studied here. I am interested in the B.Tech. computer science programme." |
Melodious medicine can ease your suffering
Noida, July 25 This was revealed by Prof. Dinesh Sharma, head of zoology department of Govt P.G. College, at a workshop on 'Melodious medicines' held on campus today. Sharma has been doing research on music therapy for the last seven years and at present, working on a project funded by the University Grant Commission to evaluate the effect of music on human biochemistry and physiology. "Earlier, I used to take medicines to relieve stress every night. Since I resorted to music therapy, I do not require medicines. I listen to melodious songs before sleep and during stress," said Dhiraj Kumar, a student. At the workshop, Sharma explained which type, how and what time one should listen to music so that it can help overcome BP, pain, stress, depression, etc. "Most people, especially teenagers, take to alcohol, smoking and other unhealthy things to overcome tension and depression, but these addictions bring only pain. Music therapy is an ideal way to control these problems," said Sharma. "Music is helpful in controlling BP, angina, labour pains and even impotency," added the professor. |

AS they say true art never ages. In fact, it gets better and more expensive with time. Veteran artist Anjolie Ela Menon celebrated her 70th birthday last week. At the Habitat Centre, the Prime Minister’s wife Gursharan Kaur released a book covering six decades of Anjolie’s contribution to Indian Art. There was an art exhibition of her work and the launch of her book, both titled “Through the Patina.”
Film maker Shyam Benegal, who unveiled Anjolie’s book, narrated how he has been seeing Anjolie’s art for 50 years. Even then, he said, there was a uniqueness to her work which remarkably is still there. Sharmila Tagore, Jaya Jaitely and the French Ambassador also narrated their personal stories with Anjolie. The gallery was full of the artist’s recent and retrospective works. Gursharan Kaur said with a twinkle in her eye, “Anjolie and her sense of mischief and wit will always keep her 17.” Way to go dear! Pranab’s dinner diplomacy The troubleshooter of the Congress, Pranab Mukherjee, is an excellent host. Whenever he wants to discuss something of importance either with his colleagues, UPA partners or the members of the Opposition parties, he invites them for a meal at home. Every partner of the UPA government has shared a meal at Pranab’s table. But recently he invited Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley for lunch. The purpose was to evolve a consensus on the goods and services tax which was generating a lot of hue and cry. Must say that the Opposition leaders came out convinced that Pranab Da was right and they will support him. As the monsoon session approaches, Pranab Da is going to have to host a lot of lunches and dinners for the session to be smooth sailing. Get ready for some baat and bhaat folks. Games and aam aadmi As Delhiites welcomed reprieve from the heat with the showers, they were left wondering whether all this construction in the name of the Commonwealth Games going on in the city is worth it? The construction being made for the Commonwealth Games and the new Metro lines work has dug up the whole city. Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit was also stuck in a traffic jam for three hours last week and is a bit jittery now about the preparation of the Games. It is a nightmare at the moment for Delhi’s ordinary people who have to commute from one place to another for work across their mega city. And as the final lap of the Commonwealth preparations gets under way the quarrels are getting louder. Mani Shankar Aiyer, former sports minister, has become the latest of the vocal critics, saying that the aam aadmi is being taxed for the benefit of a handful of Olympic Association officials. Sports minister M.S.Gill too has joined the chorus of “it’s not my job.” Delhi’s Chief Minister, is jittery but not yet part of the chorus. The big names who have cancelled their visit to the Games include the world’s fastest man- Jamaican Usain Bolt. The British monarch, the head of the Commonwealth, is also skipping the Games for the first time in 40 years. Gill has asked the Commonwealth Games Federation chief to ensure that countries brings athletes too rather than a battery of officials. India too has played its own role in ensuring top athletes missing the event. It is now likely that the organising committee which has been found wanting on several other fronts did not even do a good job of negotiating with the participating countries with regard to their top athletes. |
Humidity makes Delhiites sweat
New Delhi, July 25 The maximum temperature today was 34.9 degree Celsius while the minimum was 28 degrees, both being one degree above the normal for this time of the year. Met officials forecast that the sky would remain cloudy in the next 24 hours and there is a possibility of rains. |
Rise in dengue cases
New Delhi, July 25 "There has been a rise in the number of people coming to the hospital with cold, cough and fever. Many have been admitted being suspected for dengue," said Dr Randeep Guleria. Seven-year-old Fakir, resident of Okhla, whose brother is currently in a serious condition at AIIMS, was the first victim of the fatal sting of the mosquito this season. However, MCD officials maintain that his death on Thursday was due to the disease that he contracted from his home-state Bihar. |
