Pakistan Army Chief Ashfaq Pervez Kayani is widely believed to have played a spoilsport in the peace talks between India and Pakistan in Islamabad on Thursday. Kayani, seen as the real power centre in Pakistan, called on Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in quick succession just before External Affairs Minister SM Krishna was scheduled to meet the two Pakistani leaders.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu and 74 party lawmakers, who were arrested by the Maharashtra Police at Dharmabad in Nanded district, today refused to apply for bail. A bandh was observed in the town in protest against the “adamant” stand of the Andhra leaders with the Dharmabad town, which lies close to the Andhra Pradesh border, was completely shut down.

‘Drunk’ CRPF jawan kills 6 colleagues, shot dead
Ranchi, July 17
A "drunk" CRPF jawan allegedly opened fire from his AK-47 rifle killing six of his colleagues, including an officer, who had reprimanded him for consuming alcohol on duty minutes before the shooting spree in Saraikela district of Jharkhand. The alleged shooter was gunned down after a four-hour drama by other CRPF personnel last night, preventing further casualties.

Film director and leader of the "Naam Thamizhar" We Tamils), Seeman, was detained under the National Security Act today on charges of making an inflammatory speech inciting Tamil youths against Sinhalese students and Buddhist monks living here. A special team of the Chennai police served the detention order on Seeman who is presently lodged in the central prison at Vellore.

US files suit over racial bias against Indians
Washington, July 17
The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against the owner and management of an apartment complex at Renton in Washington State for racial discrimination against Indians who were treated less favourably than other tenants and even told to “go back” to India. The lawsuit seeking monetary damages and an order barring further discrimination was filed yesterday in the US District Court for the Western District of Washington and named as defendants Summerhill Place LLC - the owner of Summerhill Place Apartments; GRAN Inc. - the management company; and Rita Lovejoy - the former on-site manager.
