Centre snub to Punjab, Haryana on flood relief
‘Utilise’ calamity funds first

Reacting to the hue and cry over financial aid by Punjab and Haryana following recent floods, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs today made it clear to the two states that calamity relief funds worth Rs 3,467 crore were yet to be utilised by the two.

Reminding the chief ministers of the two states about the unitilised funds (Punjab: Rs 2,316 cr; Haryana: Rs 1,151 crore), the ministry said: “The balances available at their disposal under the Calamity Relief Fund should be utilized for initiation of immediate restoration/repair works and for providing immediate relief to the people affected by floods in the two states.”

Separately, the ministry today said a Central team, headed by Joint Secretary (Border Management), had been constituted to assess damages in Punjab and Haryana. In Haryana, the ministry pointed out, five teams of the National Disaster Relief Force, comprising of 206 personnel along with 32 boats, had been deployed. And in Punjab, five teams, comprising 194 personnel along with 28 boats, had been stationed.

Notably, the two states had sought central assistance to cope with floods and to pay the farmers for the damages to their standing paddy crop in various parts, including Ambala, Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Patiala, Dera Bassi and Sangrur.
