Picture perfect: But what lies beneath?

Sukhna looks beautiful these days, with fresh water shimmering in the sun, but what lies beneath the water? An ecological crisis, unless afforestation of catchment areas, desilting and de-weeding is done, systematically and earnestly. The Tribune campaign recently showed the need for concerted action and while three days of rain, right at the onset of monsoon brought a cheer among Sukhna Lake lovers, there is a concern that it might wash away the urgency of what needs to be done.

Officials say the level of water has risen by more than two feet during the past week. Meteorological experts predict rainy days ahead, while the Engineering Department maintains that it has done its share of work for the current season. Though water has covered a significant portion of the parched area near the Regulator End, it is much too early for congratulations.

Now is the time for the Ministry of Environment and Forests to work on the comprehensive plan of action for the future. Sanjeev Singh Bariana and Smriti Sharma talked to a number of concerned citizens and experts to seek solutions to save the Sukhna Lake.
