Agent-doc nexus surfaces again Amritsar, June 22 This has raised many questions over the efforts of the hospital administration, which has miserably failed to rein in these unwanted elements. Moreover, the realisation of the fact that agents operate in the presence of doctors, has left a lot to be desired on the part of the medical fraternity, as this also questions their integrity towards the hospital. Agents’ unabashed entry in hospitals poses many questions. The authorities’ claim to have taken a number of measures to curb this practice adopted by the owners of private laboratories (situated right outside the hospital), also doesn’t seem to hold much water. These owners press in their agents to catch customers - to get lab tests conducted on them at exorbitant prices, opposed to the comparatively reasonable rates at the hospital - irrespective of whether they can afford it or not. An agent was caught red-handed by the Medical Superintendent, GNDH, Dr RPS Boparai from the medical ward of the hospital and was later handed over to the police. The MS immediately shifted all the fourth class employees of the ward as a measure to end the practice. As doctors do not come under the purview of Medical Superintendents, the MS has written to Dr SS Shergill, Principal of the college, to take action against doctors present in the ward, who had deliberately turned a blind eye at that time. Although, Dr Boparai refused to comment on this, sources revealed that three resident doctors were present at the time when the accused was taking blood samples and was caught
red-handed by the MS. The hospital consists of four labs having a team of qualified doctors and technicians and provides the lab test facilities at rates one-thrid of those provided by the agents. OfficialSpeak: Dr RPS Boparai, Medical Superintendent, GNDH Dr Boparai said the hospital authorities are determined to curb the unholy nexus operating in the hospital premises. Nobody would be allowed to break the rules. The tests are provided in the hospital at very reasonable and affordable prices. Those found guilty of the unethical practice would be dealt with accordingly. Dr SS Shergill, Principal, Medical College Dr Shergill said, “I have yet to receive the report from Dr Boparai. At present I am in Chandigarh would be returning to the city by tomorrow evening.” While strongly reacting to the arrest of an agent of a private laboratory, he said the hospital and medical college authorities are doing every bit to discourage this practice. In fact earlier too we had reprimanded a doctor for indulging in such a practice. |

Government vision: Elevated road ramp blocks Pingalwara approach Amritsar, June 22 Cause of concern: A 10-foot-high pillar of the proposed ramp of the elevated road has been built right opposite the entrance of Pingalwara House, situated opposite to the bus stand. Once the ramp gets extension, hardly any space would be left for the approach to the Pingalwara, established for the destitute and mentally challenged patients. This three-storey building currently facilitates over 1,100 patients who are housed, fed and looked after by the Pingalwara society. It was observed that the entry and exit of a 12-foot-high ambulance (approximately) from this point, too, would be restricted. The management of the Pingalwara rued that the worst was yet to come when they would have to transport any of the patients in case of any emergency situation. This happens to be the main branch of the Pingalwara society which houses the administrative complex, a female ward, children’s ward, rehabilitation centre, printing press, dispensary, medical lab, dental centre and the common kitchen. These buildings have been built on the three sides of its premises. Therefore, the option of opening a gate on the other side, too, gets ruled out. The Pingalwara, apart from providing shelter to children, also has a basic operation room for trauma care of accident victims and a free primary school running from its
premises. |
