Tata Group offered to contain Bhopal damage: Montek
Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission of India, on Friday confirmed that chairman of Tata Group had offered to organise a remediation to contain the damage caused by the Bhopal gas leak. Meanwhile, amid rising controversy and protests by political parties regarding the demanding the arrest of the main accused, the Union Carbide ex-CEO Anderson, Congress on Friday denied that former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi had helped Warren Anderson, then chairman of Union Carbide Corporation, flee the country.

PC Alexander denies Rajiv Gandhi's role in Anderson's escape
Adding another controversial twist to the Bhopal gas disaster case, PC Alexander, former Principal Secretary to then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, on Friday said that the central government was not aware of the circumstances that led Warren Anderson, the then chairman of Union Carbide Corporation, to leave the country after the Bhopal gas tragedy, the world's biggest industrial disaster in 1984. Doubts about Rajiv's role also persist owing to the fact that the PMO did not even pull up the state government for aiding Anderson's hasty release.

Government has ignored eastern Himalayan region: Ramesh
Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday said that the eastern Himalayan region has been ignored on the state-formulated ecological policies. Pointing out central government's apparent 'bias' towards the western Himalayan belt, Ramesh reflected that the eastern Himalayan region had been left out on all fronts pertaining to development and climatic change assessments. Meanwhile, Ramesh added that India's northeast, because of its rich biodiversity, was selected for the opening session of seven consultations, which would be held across the country.
