Army suspends Major in fake encounter case
Colonel too penalised; decision ahead of PM’s J-K visit
Srinagar, June 6
The day before Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh begins a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, his second in the last seven months, the Army responded today to allegations of a fake encounter at Machil by removing a Colonel from command and placing a Major under suspension.

Judgment on Bhopal gas tragedy today
Bhopal, June 6
After a trial lasting more than two decades, the judgement on Bhopal Gas tragedy, the world's worst industrial disaster which killed and maimed thousands of people, would be pronounced tomorrow. Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohan P Tiwari will pronounce the judgement after a 23-year-long trial in the toxic leak case from the now defunct Union Carbide factory on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984.

Seeking better protection against incoming enemy’s ballistic missiles and air-borne attacks launched by maverick terrorist organisations, India is to acquire the latest “x-band” radars that have an astonishing 4,600-km range to pick out missiles and airborne objects.

‘3 Idiots’ sweeps IIFA awards
Colombo, June 6
Aamir Khan starrer “3 Idiots” swept this year's IIFA awards bagging 8 honours, including the Best Film award, with megastar Amitabh Bachchan winning the Best Actor award for his role as a progeria-afflicted child in “Paa”. The Best Actress award was shared jointly by Vidya Balan for “Paa” and Kareena Kapoor for “3 Idiots”. The Best Director trophy went to Rajkumar Hirani for “3 Idiots”, while he along with Abhijat Joshi, Vidhu Vinod Chopra won the Best Story award for the same film.

Shanghai feasts on tangdi kebabs
