Rathore in PGI after chest pain
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 5
Former Haryana Director General of Police SPS Rathore, serving an 18-month jail term for molesting Ruchika Girhotra in 1990, was admitted to the PGI’s emergency at 1 am on Sunday after he complained of chest pain and restlessness in Burail Jail here. Senior cardiologists, who were on alert since 10 pm, examined him.

While the media was not allowed inside, sources said Rathore underwent an ECG and was advised further tests. Till the filing of this report, his exact condition could not be ascertained, but sources said he was stable.

Rathore, who was brought to the hospital in Burail Jail’s Maruti van, complained of chest pain and restlessness at about 10 pm. According to official sources, jail doctors found that the 68-year-old former cop, who underwent heart surgery in 2007, had an increased heartbeat. Following this, a team from Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, was called to attend to the disgraced former top cop, which advised that he be taken to the PGI.

Additional IGP (Prisons) NPS Randhawa said Rathore resisted attempts of the jail staff to take him to the PGI. For almost three hours, huge drama was witnessed inside the high-security jail as staff repeatedly tried to convince Rathore. His wife and counsel Abha Rathore was also called to the jail to persuade him to undergo treatment at the PGI.

Yesterday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had deferred pronouncement of the verdict on his revision petition to June 29.
