The police today foiled a major terror attack by defusing an “amateurish” but potentially powerful crude car bomb in the heart of the New York city’s famous tourist hub of Times Square, averting what could have been a “very deadly event” in the US.

The BJP government in Karnataka received a big blow today when a minister from Chief Minister Yeddyurappas’s home district Shimoga resigned following a report in a daily saying the minister had raped a friend’s wife. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Harathalu Halappa resigned after a Kannada daily carried a front-page story that alleged that he had raped the wife of a social worker.

Call it an act of benevolence or its strategy to attract migrant workers to the state whose count has dwindled of late, the Punjab government is offering interest-free loans to daily wagers to purchase computers. Being extended to construction and industrial workers, the scheme is being taken care of by the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board’, which was constituted last year.
