‘Spy’ diplomat sent to judicial remand
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 1
IFS officer Madhuri Gupta, who was arrested for allegedly passing on secretive information to her links in Pakistani intelligence agencies, was today sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Presented before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja after the conclusion of her five-day police remand, Madhuri claimed in the court that she was being “framed and was a victim of conspiracy”.

During the hearing, the Delhi police sought two-day extension in Gupta’s remand for her custodial interrogation, which was refused by the court.

“Madhuri Gupta has been sent to judicial custody till May 15,” Yogender Dahiya, counsel for Gupta, said while addressing mediapersons outside Tees Hazari court later in the day.

According to court sources, the police wanted to extend her remand as they claimed she was changing her statements time and again in order to mislead them.

Gupta, a second secretary at the Indian mission in Islamabad, was arrested on April 23. She came under suspicion months ago and was called to Delhi on the pretext of helping to prepare for the SAARC summit that ended in Bhutan yesterday.
