The Income Tax department has issued notices to Knight Riders Sports Private Limited and Gameplan Sports to appear before it in connection with the recent search operations at the offices of the two entities. Also, the BCCI submitted documents relating to the financial transactions pertaining to the Indian Premier League to the I-T department.

Promptly jumping to the defence of Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel’s daughter Poorna Patel, national carrier Air India on Friday said it operated a charter flight to carry IPL players from Chandigarh to Chennai as per rules and procedures, maintaining that she was not involved in the operation.

REAL SHOCKER: Tariff goes up by 10.2 pc for 
domestic consumers

Power bills of domestic consumers in Punjab are all set to shoot up with the state electricity regulatory panel announcing a steep tariff hike of 10.2 per cent today. The average hike for all categories is 7.5 per cent.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said it expected normal rainfall in the June-September monsoon season this year, thereby raising hopes of rebound in farm output after last year’s drought as also further improvement in economy following a long recessionary period.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram today reiterated that the government will continue to follow its two-pronged approach on dealing with the Naxal problem-development and calibrated police action. Speaking at a meeting of the consultative committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs today, the Home Minister said. He said the debate on what should take place first- development or police action- is misplaced. The decision will have to vary from situation-to-situation and from state-to-state. “No fixed prescription is possible”, he told the members of the committee comprising MPs.
