SIT can’t summon Modi: Gujarat govt

New Delhi, April 16
The Gujarat government has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court maintaining that the apex court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) had no power to summon Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other accused in the murder of ex-Congress MP Ehasan Jafri.

According to the government, the apex court has no power to stay the ongoing trial in the 2002 riots cases and criminal cases should be filed against NGO activist Teesta Setalvad on charges of tutoring witnesses, intimidating SIT and carrying out other activities with ulterior political and vested interests.

The affidavit has been filed in response to the April 6 decision of the SC to consider the application of Teesta and others seeking a stay on the trial and transferring of the case to the CBI for investigation.
