Rita Bahuguna slams Mayawati over Education Act row
Rita Bahuguna Joshi, chief of Congress party for Uttar Pradesh, slammed state chief Mayawati on Sunday for seeking funds from the central government to implement the Right to Education (RTE) Act in the state. Joshi said that Mayawati has emptied the state coffers for erecting statutes and building tourist parks, but when it came to education for children she cannot implement the Act due to lack of funds.

Best legal aid to Indians facing UAE death sentence: Preneet Kaur
India's junior Foreign Minister Preneet Kaur on Sunday in Patiala met the kin of 17 Indians who have been sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the charge of murdering a Pakistani national. The minister assured the families that the government has sought the best legal aid assistance in the UAE.

Orissa CM condemns Maoist attack, announces Rs 8 lakh ex-gratia
Naveen Patnaik, chief minister of Orissa, on Sunday condemned the killing of nine personnel of the Special Operations Group (SOG) in a Maoist attack when the rebels blew up the bus carrying them. The attack took place at Govindapalli village in Malkangiri district of the state earlier on Sunday. Patnaik also announced an ex-gratia of Rs8 lakh and an insurance sum of Rs10 lakh to the kin of security personnel killed.

Ten killed, nine injured in Pune road accident
Ten people were killed and nine injured in an accident on the Pune Satara highway in Maharashtra on Monday. The accident occurred at around 4.30 am, when the tyre of a jeep suddenly burst, causing it to overturn. Another speeding vehicle hit the jeep from the back, which then hit the wall of a new tunnel in the highway, killing all ten passengers. The jeep was on its way to Mumbai from Satara.

India pays tribute to Babu Jagjivan Ram on his 103rd birth anniversary
Indian leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari offered tributes to Babu Jagjivan Ram, former freedom fighter on his 103rd birth anniversary. Meira Kumar, speaker of India's lower house of parliament and daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram, also offered tributes along with Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Police grill Shoaib on Ayesha's claims,seize passport
Police on Monday seized the passport of Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik and asked him not to leave the country as they questioned him in the wake of a complaint of cheating lodged by the father of Ayesha Siddiqui, who claims to be his wife. A police team led by an assistant commissioner of police quizzed 28 year old Shoaib for close to two hours at the residence of tennis star 23 year old Sania Mirza, to whom he is scheduled to get married on April 15.
