With terror threats in the aviation sector looming large, the government today decided to make the Anti-Hijacking Act of 1982 tougher by including death sentence as a punishment for hijacking a plane with intention of creating a terror strike.

A week before blast, Beant killers were nearly in cop net
Chandigarh Police had challaned two of them for flouting rules
Chandigarh, March 19
Just a week before the blast, the Chandigarh Police had stopped two assassins of Punjab’s former Chief Minister Beant Singh for violating traffic rules. But, let them off. The Central Bureau of Investigation’s counsel SK Saxena and RK Handa made the revelation during the hearing of appeals filed by the assassins against their conviction and sentence, including death penalty.

8 pc DA hike for Central staff

In a major development that is sure to bring a smile on the faces of over 50 lakh central government employees, the Union cabinet today approved an eight per cent hike in dearness allowance (DA), which will also be applicable for the pensioners. The move will also come as a relief to government employees trying to cope up with spiraling inflation and price hike.

No fresh taxes in TN budget

With just a year to go for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the DMK-government today refrained from imposing fresh taxes in the budget even as it announced several sops, including hike in sugarcane procurement price to Rs 2,000 per tonne, abolition of tuition fee till postgraduate courses in arts and science colleges, and free iodised salt for pregnant women.

SC dismisses Panchkula dyslexic student’s plea on calculator use
New Delhi, March 19
The Supreme Court today dismissed the petition of a dyslexic Panchkula student seeking permission to use a calculator for writing his Class XII CBSE exam. Incidentally, the ICSE allows use of calculators by such students.
