Govt forced to defer N-liability bill
New Delhi, March 15
Faced with stiff resistance from a united opposition, the government today deferred the introduction of Civil Liability for Nuclear Damages Bill in the Lok Sabha, despite first having listed it in the day’s business. The Bill seeks to fix at Rs 300 crore the civil liability of operators in case of each nuclear accident.

After it was forced to defer the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha last week, the UPA government suffered another setback today when a united opposition and large-scale absenteeism from its own ranks forced the ruling combine to put off the introduction of the controversial Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill.

Interceptor missile test-fire fails

The country’s ballistic missile development programme took a step backwards today. The test-fire of the advanced air defence (AAD) interceptor missile, designed to take off and destroy enemy missiles in mid-air, failed to materialise off the coast of Orissa this morning.

7 STF men held
Panipat, March 15
The Haryana Police, which was put on the back foot due to the alleged involvement of members of its special tack force (STF) in extortion cases, has arrested seven cops in a late-night development here today. An ASP rank officer, too, has been detained for his alleged involvement.

The Supreme Court today ordered the DAV Managing Committee to pay Rs 10 crore as interim compensation for the victims of the fire tragedy at a school function at Dabwali in Haryana on December 23, 1995.

Jallianwala Massacre
India disapproves of British claims
New Delhi, March 15
Indian researchers have found that many more people than what the British claimed were actually killed in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 13, 1919. Also, identities of 1600 more people have been established from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh who were among those killed in the First War of Independence in 1857.
