Day after, Pune moves on The Saturday night’s blast at German Bakery in the Koregaon park area has done little to curb the famed nightlife of this vibrant city. Hotels and restaurants in the posh Deccan neighborhood were brimming over with young crowds out to celebrate the Valentine’s Day. Popular teen hangouts were packed to capacity with lovelorn couples having a rollicking time. The bomb blast that claimed nine lives seemed like a distant memory despite many of the victims being students. However, the youngsters were certainly more cautious. “We are a lot more careful and also wary of unattended bags,” says Vishal Kaushik, a New Delhi based student studying at the Symbiosis Institute in Pune. “What has to happen will happen,” says his girlfriend, who is clearly bugged at being reminded of the blast. At the cramped coffee shop where the two are among scores of other couples, the security threat is yet to sink in. “We have told our waiters to look for unattended baggage,” says the manager. In case of anything suspicious, he says, they would call the cops. Barely a few yards away, a jampacked cybercafe is a bit more cautious after the Maharashtra government tightened security measures. “We insist on people showing their identification cards,” says Samit Paranjpe, the owner. Most of those who drop in are students who surf till late in the night. The city multiplexes were also doing brisk business. Calls to a few multiplexes revealed that shows were running houseful. The weekend’s biggest hit is Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘My Name is Khan.’ “No current bookings today,” said officials of two multiplexes. Even the bus operators plying between Mumbai and Pune insist that business is normal. “There are no cancellations and buses to Pune are going full,” the attendant at a Neeta Travels stall at Dadar in Central Mumbai told this reporter. With long queues, Neeta Travels which operates buses at 15 minute intervals between Mumbai and Pune, was seen deploying an extra bus at 1 pm when this correspondent was waiting to board one.
Whodunit? Cops clueless Investigators are still waiting to unearth the identity of the group that carried out the bomb blast in Pune on Saturday evening, Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh told reporters today. Sleuths from the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of the Maharashtra police, the National Investigation Agency and the CBI are conducting the probe, he said. He, however, refused to confirm reports that the blast at the popular German Bakery in the posh Koregaon Park area carried the signature of the Indian Mujahideen which is accused of carrying out similar blasts in other parts of the country. The Pune top cop said the identities of those who lost their lives in the blast have been established. Two of the nine victims were foreigners, while the rest were Indians, Singh said. While one of the dead foreigners was an Italian woman named Nadia, the other was an Iranian student at the Symbiosis institute in the city. Nearly 60 persons, including 12 foreigners, have been injured in the attack, Singh said. |
