Doordarshan is 50 but not really going strong. Though its reach is still awe-inspiring, the world’s largest terrestrial television network is in urgent need of resuscitation, writes Saibal Chatterjee

Remember the carrot-munching Karamchand, the sleuth who helped the police crack difficult cases in his own inimitable style in Pankuj Parashar’s 1985 detective series that took its title from the protagonist’s name? You might also recall Kitty, his somewhat scatter-brained assistant. The gifted Pankaj Kapur, playing the eponymous private eye, was the star of the show.
