Mumbai, January 30
One police officer and a biker were killed and four police constables were seriously injured when a woman driving under the influence of alcohol knocked them down near Mumbai's Marine Drive early this morning, the police said.

The names of the dead have been given as Assistant Sub Inspector Dinanath Shinde of the traffic police department and Afzal Kanojia.

The incident happened in the wee hours of Saturday when Shinde was checking the licence of Kanojia, who was riding a two-wheeler.

Suddenly, a black Honda CRV driven at high speed by Nooriya Yusuf Haveliwala, 27, came from the Opera House end and rammed into into a stationary traffic police Qualis and two other vehicles — a motorcycle and a parked taxi — after which it smashed into the policemen conducting a nakabandi, the police said.

While Kanojia died instantly, Shinde died later in hospital. The four injured constables are battling for life at the Bombay Hospital nearby.

A stunned but unharmed Nooriya was immediately taken into custody. Blood tests conducted on her indicated the presence of 457 ml of alcohol in her blood as against the 50 ml allowed by law, the police said.

Nooriya, a beautician, has been remanded in police custody till February 5. The charges slapped against her include culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing death by negligent driving.
