Defining teacher’s role

Defining teacher’s role IN the modern scenario, the role of teachers has been changing due to the pressure of social and economic changes. The society expects their leadership to make education an effective instrument of nation building. A teacher has not only to instruct, but also to inspire the student; he or she has to influence the character of his or her students, and equip them with ideas and values to make them worthy citizens. A teacher must help students develop good moral character, national awareness, democratic values, loyalty and social responsibilities. It is here that a teacher’s national responsibility finds expression. The role of a teacher is to shape the minds of the younger generation. So teachers must instill into our students tolerance of different opinions and viewpoints, and acquaint them with the modern wisdom expressed in the dictum of Voltaire: “I do not accept what you say; but I will defend with my life your right to say so”. Today, the teacher has to concern himself with the total development of the child and not only with one or two aspects. He must be a philosopher illuminating the way of his intellectual and spiritual progress. He must be his guide in his moral and aesthetic advancement. A teacher has to use new methods to help in the holistic growth of students. The success of students depends essentially upon the competence of teachers, their sense of dedication and their identification of the interests of students. The teacher is not a dispenser of knowledge only. It is important for him to initiate his students into the art of learning by helping them acquire the right mental attitude and learning habit. He should also spend more time diagnosing the learner’s need, motivating and encouraging his students and checking the knowledge acquired. The teacher is now expected not only to inculcate knowledge but also to encourage thinking. He has to become more of an advisor, a partner to talk to. He has to help seek out conflicting arguments rather than hand out readymade truths. For this, he will have to devote more time and energy to productive and creative activities. To play this role effectively, the teacher faces a greater challenge today than at any time in history. Teachers are being challenged to utilise new approaches and methods in an effort to improve learning outcomes. Teachers need to adopt and keep pace with new methods and technologies. It is not sufficient for teachers merely to impart knowledge of the subject. They should also motivate students and prepare them to carve a niche for themselves in the chosen field. Against the backdrop of the changing objective of education, teacher’s role is also changing from information provider to facilitator, counsellor, adviser, guide, mentor, resource person and technology manager. The teacher’s role is to build up students’ capacities and mobilise them to acquire knowledge and wisdom. The role of a teacher in modern society has proved an inexhaustible subject for inaugural lectures. There are virtually no empirical studies on the contemporary role of teachers. Today, the teacher arrives at a conception of his necessary role through his own experience as a pupil, his experience at the job, his reading habits, exchange of views and his professional training. Teachers can arouse curiosity, stimulate independence, encourage intellectual rigour and create the condition for success in education. In Indian tradition, teachers have enjoyed a place of highest dignity, status and honour. There was a time when the teacher was considered worthy of worship. Though this position has somewhat eroded in course of time, he still remains an important influence in the life of the youth. Teachers are builders of the nation. They are the real masons who lay the foundation of a nation committed to the growth and development of values. They are responsible for creating a learning society, which continuously evolves in its social, cultural and ethical aspects. A society cannot progress without the help of good teachers. Social justice and democratic freedom have to be promoted by teachers through the practice of education. Although in the course of time, the role of teachers is changing, they are always regarded as the benefactors of mankind. Of all the different factors which influence the quality of education and contribute to the national development, competence and character of teachers are undoubtedly significant. In an educational set-up, no other personality can have an influence more profound than that of a teacher. A corrupt and incompetent teacher is not only a bad individual, but also the harbinger of a corrupt and incompetent generation. Thus, the importance of a teacher as an architect of future generations also demands that only the competent members of our intelligentsia be allowed to qualify for this noble profession as human values truly begins and ends with the teacher. Therefore, a teacher should be a missionary, a mentor, a reformer, a guide and a tutor, so that he can train the students in virtues and graces. A teacher who lacks energy, enthusiasm and character is a disgrace to profession. Sidney Hook aptly remarked: “Everyone who remembers his own educational experience remembers teachers, not methods and techniques.”

Bollywood stars speak out on stress AAMIR KHAN-starrer 3 Idiots has spurred Bollywood personalities to look at their educational qualifications, how they got their degrees and how students should lead their lives. The film, about life in an engineering college, tried to give the message that getting a degree is not the be-all and end-all of education. Here is how some Bollywood personalities react to questions on their student life and give their advice to students: Urmila Matondkar: “I’m a BA in psychology. I was always under stress in both school and college, as I had to manage both studies and acting. I dealt with it by diverting stress into positive aggression in my studies. “My advice to students: Stress is part of life. You can’t run away from it. So deal with it before it’s too late. It helps to be book-smart at any time of life, as long as you learn from those books and not just mug.” Dino Morea: “I became a graduate. Was never stressed at school. Had the best time ever. Yes, if reading and being aware of a subject is being book-smart, for sure it’s handy in life. I was never depressed in school. I was naughty, but I studied hard.” Kangana Ranaut: “I left school when I was 16. But I’m glad to tell you I’ve always been a topper in my class. To achieve that I used to study 18 hours a day. “The science in school didn’t help me much in my daily life as an adult. But the passion to be the best in my class and the love for books remain. Now I’m an artiste and I read on art. And I thank my hard work during school for this.” Pritam Chakraborty: “I did BSc honours in geology from Presidency College in Kolkata, postgraduate diploma in sound recording and engineering from the Film and Television Institute, Pune. I think mugging up and learning without understanding is useless in later life. But a basic education is important to build up personality. “I used to feel stressed before exams after Class VII when I stood first in the class. Later, everybody at home became interested in my rank and that was a matter of stress for me for years. “I had music to kill the depression created due to studies. Also, I had a great circle of family and friends. Doing badly in academics doesn’t mean you do badly in life. Discover your inner strength and choose a career you enjoy.” Celina Jaitly: “I’ve done one and a half years of BSc and have a software engineering degree from NIIT. I scored 89 per cent in 10th boards and 75 per cent in 12th. I used to feel very stressed during board exams. Thanks to my parents I made it through all my panic attacks. “Playing a sport like tennis or swimming is a great way to keep fresh and alert. I remember my mother insisted we play a sport for half an hour even during exams. It was a great stress buster. Focus well on your studies. Do meditation and take power naps.” Ken Ghosh: “I’m a 12th standard fail. In school I was quite a smart kid and actually enjoyed studies because of excellent teachers.” Amole Gupte: “I was a class topper with distinction till the 12th, then passed BCom with 37 per cent, having tasted theatre through degree college. I remember my headmistress in primary school who instilled my self-worth by discovering my recitation skills. In high school I loved my Hindi teacher Naamvar Singh, a poet and lyricist of repute. And my English teachers, Parmar Sir and Acharya Sir, for their passion for the language.”
