New Delhi, January 17
The chasm between Amar Singh and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Mulayam Singh Yadav widened further today with the latter eventually accepting Amar’s resignation from all party posts. He had tendered his resignation on January 6.

In a brief letter, Mulayam said, “On January 6, you resigned from all posts, which I sadly accept.”

He also expressed his personal gratitude to the former spokesman and general secretary of the party for his invaluable contribution to the party.

Notwithstanding the polite acknowledgement of Amar Singh’s contribution by Mulayam, sources hinted that with the kind of bitterness and acrimony developing between the Thakur leader from Gorakhpur and the frontline SP leaders, he might not continue in the SP for long.

His camp follower, cine-star Sanjay Dutt, has already resigned. In the coming days, others like Lok Sabha MP Jayaprada, Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachcha and Abu Asim Azmi might start attacking the party leading to their exit as well, and perhaps eventual expulsion of Amar Singh from the party.

Jaya Bachchan’s term is coming to an end later this year and she might not get another extension.

SP MLA from Moradabad Sandeep Agarwal is likely to raise his banner against SP secretary general Ram Gopal Yadav. Agarwal has threatened to walk away with 26 MLAs. It has to be seen how far he carries out his threat.

SP sources said Mulayam dispatched his acceptance letter from his hometown Etawah to Amar Singh.

But while there was full realisation in the SP that the Thakur had immense potential to cause further damage to the SP, there was a visible sense of relief even bordering on joy in a good section of the party that used to criticise Amar Singh because of Mulayam’s fondness for him.

Amar Singh had sent in his resignation from Dubai on January 6 from the post of SP general secretary, national spokesperson and member of Parliamentary Board citing poor health.

He had undergone a kidney transplant operation in Singapore last year While, Amar Singh cited his poor health for his decision to quit party posts, it was known to everyone that he had fallen out with Mulayam’s cousin Ram Gopal Yadav, and Akhilesh Yadav.
