Mohali, January 15
The Punjab police today registered a case of corruption against six clerks of the Chandigarh-based office of the state police chief for allegedly facilitating prized postings for around 400 non-gazetted officers, including assistant sub-inspectors and sub-inspectors, after their promotion.

The beneficiaries, presently posted in different districts of the state, were given the promotions at their place of postings. On the other hand, their batchmates were left high and dry.

Those booked are Nek Ram Sharma, Gyan Chand, Prem Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Ankit and Sandeep.

SSP, Mohali, GPS Bhullar, confirmed the registration of the case against them, but refused to give any further details.

Till late in the evening, officials were busy going through documents of the case. The top brass in the police is learnt to have taken a serious view of the corruption case. It could, however, not be ascertained whether the clerks had been rounded up for investigations.

Sources said the beneficiaries allegedly bribed the clerks to manipulate their postings. Many of the promoted officials remained posted with senior IAS and IPS officials.

Refusing to share details in the case, investigating officials said the exact amount of money paid as bribe was yet to be ascertained. The case has been registered on a complaint by the state DIG (Administration).
