Fake notes problem alarming: Pranab
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 15
Reiterating that the problem of fake currency was “alarming and dangerous”, the government today blamed it on groups trying to destabilise the Indian economy by introducing counterfeit notes.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in Rajya Sabha today that there were two kinds of groups - of individuals working for profit and of a section trying to destabilise the economy by circulating fake currency. In his written statement in the upper house, the Finance Minister also admitted that security breaches in notes were last updated in 2005 and a committee had been set up for the same.

"The situation is alarming," he said, answering supplementaries during Question Hour. “It would take another two years before upgraded security features are included in currency notes. It would be difficult to quantify counterfeit currency in circulation. It is anybody's guess," he said, adding that there was no authentic information on fake currency.

Punjab tops female foeticide list

Attribute it to the vigilant Punjab Police or a society obsessed with a male child, Punjab reported the highest number of female foeticide cases reported in the country in the last three years. A total of 81 cases were registered in Punjab - 24 of them were last year alone. Rajasthan is in second place with 51 cases.

However, despite the large number of registered cases, rate of conviction for the crime is very low. In Punjab, conviction has been achieved in only two cases, that too in 2008. Similarly, in Rajasthan, there has been conviction in only one case.
