Hyderabad, December 8
The health condition of Telangana Rashtra Samithi chief K Chandrasekhar Rao worsened as his indefinite fast entered 10th day today, triggering panic in political circles and raising fears of violence in an already volatile Telangana region. The fasting leader faced grave danger to his life following rapidly falling protein levels in his blood, a team of doctors monitoring his health condition has warned. The doctors said he must immediately break his fast and start taking food orally in view of the deteriorating health condition.

“The prolonged administration of intravenous fluids is leading to problems. The protein level has been coming down day by day and this might lead to complications and increase the possibility of an infection and pose a danger to his health,” the Director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Dr B Prasada Rao said.

The signs of desperation were visible as TRS legislators stalled proceedings in the state Assembly, pressing for introduction of a resolution favouring formation of separate Telangana state. The House was adjourned for the day without transacting any business.

Tension continued to grip Telangana region, comprising 10 districts, including Hyderabad, as supporters of the statehood cause held violent demonstrations and attacked public properties.

The TRS chief, who is on hunger strike demanding creation of separate Telangana state, is being administered both saline and ‘total parental nutrition’ at NIMS but it would not be sufficient over a period of time. The fasting leader is suffering from hypoproteinemia, which means low protein content in the blood.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the TRS politburo appealed to its president to end the fast in view of the danger to his life. However, he rejected the appeal and vowed to continue the hunger strike.

The news about the worsening health condition of Rao has triggered panic among his party cadre and the student agitators who have given a call for ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme on December 10.
