Nawanshahr, November 12
Total chaos was witnessed today at JSFH Khalsa High School during dinner for players belonging to different districts who have come here to participate in the Punjab Rural Sports scheduled to be held from November 13 to 15.

It seemed that there was no one to ensure the systematic delivery of meals to the players, it was free for all and the players were virtually seen throwing plates about the place.

The pandal was filled with broken plates. One of the players was reportedly injured as a plate hit his head.

Deputy Commissioner Gurkirat Kirpal Singh was informed by some mediapersons about the chaotic scene at the common mess.

The DC then sent SDM Virpal Singh, Assistant Director (Sports) S.L. Lotey, DSP Satpal Singh Bhangu and SHO Raj Kumar to control the situation. Later the Deputy Commissioner also visited the school to monitor the service of food to the players. ADC Harminder Singh and SDM Virpal Singh were deputed there to make sure that the food was served to all the players. The players were lined up with the help of the police to ensure smooth service of food to them. Mess contractor Ramji Dass Gulati said sufficient food had been prepared but due to lack of any controlling system, the chaos occurred and crockery was damaged by the players.

Lotey said he was holding a meeting of the District Sports Officers at the ITI for giving final touches to the arrangements of the inaugural function to be held on Friday. He rushed to the site after getting information about the incident. When asked why no one was present there to ensure smooth and systematic delivery of meals to the players, the Assistant Director said it was the collective responsibility of officials of different districts. A foolproof system would be evolved so that such incidents might not recur, he added.

Jalandhar, November 12
Acting on the racial murder case of a local Merchant Navy Capt Kunal Mohanty, the High Court of Glasgow in Scotland has sentenced the accused, 25-year-old Briton, to life imprisonment.

Christopher Miller murdered Mohanty with a bladed weapon on the night of March 27 this year in Glasgow.

Mohanty was a student of Nautical College at Glasgow. Son of retired BSF DIG Dr D.K. Mohanty, he had gone to Glasgow on March 2 to appear for the examination for ship captain.

Expressing satisfaction over the speedy justice delivered by the Glasgow court, Kunal’s mother Suman Mohanty said, “Though it is an irreparable loss yet the speedy verdict has come as a big respite for us. We are grateful to the Glasgow court for helping us in probing the case and staying in touch all these months.”

She said, “Kunal spoke to me on March 26 and the next day he was murdered. It was around 4.30 pm on March 28 that we received a call from Glasgow regarding his murder.”.

In the judgement, the prosecutors stated that Kunal was done to death due to his skin colour. The prosecutors also said it was “an atrocity delivered without mercy, a death blow”. They also remarked, “Miller’s crime is as evil as it is incomprehensible”.

The Glasgow authorities managed to deliver justice within seven months, which is nothing short of a miracle for us,” Suman added.
