Himachal IGP commits suicide

Shimla, November 8
Jagjit Kumar Gupta, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Railway and Traffic, today committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver. He was 57.

The incident took place in the wee hours and his family members informed the police immediately. He was reportedly upset due to family problems for the past quite sometime. His wife had died about five years ago.

He is survived by a son and a daughter, who is an officer in the state government. According to the police, Gupta shot himself on the temple and the bullet hit the wall after piercing through his head.

The forensic expert from the IGMC, Piyush Kapila, said prima facie it was a case of suicide and there was no evidence to suggest the presence or involvement of any other person. A state police officer, Gupta was inducted into the IPS in 1985.

Superintendent of police RM Sharma said a case of suicide had been registered under Section 174 of the IPC. So far, there was no complaint from family members regarding any foul play or pressure from anyone forcing Gupta to end his life. The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem examination and the cremation will take place tomorrow.
