Jind, October 28
A 24-year-old boy and a 20-year-old unmarried girl were found hanging from a ceiling at the boy’s home in Saphakheri village here today.
The families reportedly cremated the deceased couple without prior information to the police, leading to a standoff between the police and villagers here today.
Sources said the girl was due to get married tomorrow to a boy from Thua village in the district.
The police has sent the samples, lifted from the spot, for test at the Forensic Science Laboratory, Madhuban, and registered a case. However, no arrests have been made so far.
Sources said the deceased identified as Nannu (boy) and Bittu (girl) were from different castes and had an affair, but the girl’s marriage had been fixed for tomorrow, which probably led to the tragedy.
The girl had been missing from her house since last evening, it is claimed. The police, which reached the village after receiving information about the death of the couple
and their cremation, was denied entry into the village by the locals which led the authorities to send more policemen to the site.
The villagers guarded the cremation site with sharp-edged weapons and sticks till the bodies were burnt completely, it is stated. The matter was, however, resolved after a dialogue between village elders and senior police officials when the police assured that nobody would be unduly harassed.
SSP Satish Balan said while the circumstantial evidence suggests that the couple had committed suicide, the haste shown by the kin to cremate the bodies had been a little baffling.
The test would help know the identity of the deceased and if they had consumed a poisonous substance, he said, adding that a thorough investigation would follow to know the exact cause of death before an action against anyone. A case under 306 (abetment to suicide) and 201 of the IPC has been registered.
