Blast kills 49 in Peshawar
Afzal Khan writes from Islamabad

At least 49 persons were killed and over 100 injured in a massive car bomb blast in the busy Khyber Bazar in the northwestern city of Peshawar at noon today. The blast occurred about a kilometre from the provincial assembly building where the house was in session.

The bomber, who was driving a van, blew himself up on reaching the busy market. The explosion also blew up a bus packed with passengers which was passing through the area.

“The bomb was planted in a car parked in the market,” NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain told reporters on arriving at the scene.

“The explosive placed in the car was not very heavy but it caused extensive loss of lives by hitting the bus,” city police chief Imran Hashmat said.
