Deemed status doesn’t mean varsity tag: Sibal

New Delhi, September 26
The Human Resource Development Ministry is all set to tighten the noose around private education institutions that have been ‘misusing’ the university tag.

In the soon-to-be-submitted report of the government on the status and performance of deemed universities in the country, the Ministry is expected to make it clear to all education institutions that they cannot use the prestigious “university” tag on their own will. If they do, they would be liable for action.

“We will no longer allow a private university or another with deemed status to call itself a university. That sends wrong signals to students because a university is required to have high excellence and technical standards which all private institutions may not be in a position to meet,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today said.

From now on, even the institutions with deemed university status would have to name themselves as such in all correspondence, including advertisements. That, Sibal said, was necessary to convey the right impression to students who seek admissions.

A university tag will therefore come at a price — of excellence and standards. The government is meanwhile, expected to submit its report on the functioning of deemed universities, after October 4. Several such universities might face de-recognition on account of poor education and faculty standards, it is learnt.
