Tribune News Service

Mumbai, September 3
The 10-day Ganesh festival came to an end today with devotees thronging the sea to immerse idols of Ganpati amidst a light drizzle. Across the major cities of Maharashtra like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and other places devotees danced on the roads and sprayed each other with colours as the idols of the elephant-headed god was taken for immersion.

In Mumbai security was tight as police and para-military forces took guard at important places. Traffic was banned on many arterial roads as processions of trucks slowly made their way to the sea.

The Maharashtra government declared today a holiday and government and private offices shut for the day to enable their employees to participate in the Ganpati festival. Police estimated at least around 100,000 big and medium idols would be immersed along the coast of Mumbai till the wee hours of Friday.
