Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 18
In an incident of honour killing, family members and relatives of a Chheharta-based girl kidnapped her 21-year-old lover and killed him with sharp-edged weapons after tying him to a tree at a park in broad daylight here today.

Harpreet Singh, the victim, was a resident of Bhalla Colony and ran a car-décor shop on the Lawrence Road here.

The boy and the girl were allegedly planning to elope as they sensed the mood of their unapproving parents. But, the parents of the girl came to know about their plan and hatched a conspiracy to eliminate the boy to save them from social embarrassment.

Armed relatives of the girl, led by her father Surjit Singh, descended on the Bhalla Colony area looking for the boy in the morning. They kidnapped Harpreet in a vehicle at around 8 am and took him to a deserted area in a park on the GT Road.

They tied the boy to a tree and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons to death.

Meanwhile, the police got information about the incident and managed to nab two “mamas” and a “mami”, Major Singh, his wife Jasbir Kaur, and Joginder Singh, residents of Bhalla Colony, near the spot. Surjit and other accomplices, Deba and Sukhdev Singh, escaped.

SHO Sarbjit Singh said a case under Section 302, IPC, had been registered and the police parties had been dispatched to nab the culprits.
