Govt wakes up on food front

CPM activists raise anti-government slogans during a protest against rising prices of food items and other essential commodities near Parliament House in New DelhiRealising the gravity of food situation in the country, Cabinet Secretary KM Chandrasekhar has summoned the state Chief Secretaries tomorrow, even as Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar assured Parliament here today that the government had sufficient buffer stock of rice and wheat for the next 13 months.

Private labs invited to show capacity
New Delhi, August 7
The government today advised all high-risk (pregnant women, those suffering chronic respiratory disorders and cardiac problems) air travellers and airport workers to wear three-layered protective masks to prevent catching Influenza-A H1N1 virus, which is still mild in India and has not mutated. Of the 711 cases reported, 511 have been treated and discharged. Indigenous vaccine is also expected within four to seven months, the government said today.
