Cold WAR

Even after 10 years the Kargil conflict is far from over for thousands of troops stationed at the mountain posts in the area, writes Ajay Banerjee

JUST a decade ago these hills were reverberating with gunfire and were in full media glare with real-life heroes showing exemplary bravery, grit and courage in the line of duty. While a whole nation waited with bated breath and heavy hearts for the Kargil conflict to get over, there was no denying the fact that peace would be won at a heavy price.

Saga of valour, sacrifice
The Kargil war produced many heroes. PVCs and other battle honours were given to the brave sons of the soil, writes Vijay Mohan
W
aR brings out the stuff that makes legends. Blood-splattered battlefields spew forth awe-inspiring tales of heroism and sacrifice and man’s endeavour to win against seemingly insurmountable odds. The Kargil war produced its fair share of war heroes as four Param Vir Chakras and scores of other decorations, citations and battle honours bear testimony. Some have been embellished in military history, while some may have gone unsung.

A floating paradise
Located more than 1300 metres above sea level, the Inlay Lake is rimmed by blue mountain silhouettes. The clear waters of this natural lake reflect a surreal landscape of floating villages and markets, writes D.B.N. Murthy

nlay Lake is one of the major tourist attractions of Myanmar. It can easily match Venice in terms of beauty but at the same time it is quite unique and different.

Swan song for Agra Gharana?
With a declining number of patrons and students even in the city of its origin, the Agra Gharana is in throes of a survival struggle, writes Brij Khandelwal
THE Rajputs passed it on to the Mughals, in whose courts the classical Hindustani music of Agra Gharana flourished. But with a declining number of patrons and students even in the city of its origin, many experts wonder whether it is time to sing the requiem for this musical tradition?

Cut above the rest
Few actresses in Indian cinema can claim such a rich and varied repertoire as Tabu. Still she remains Bollywood’s most under-rated actress, says Derek Bose
S
HE is not your everyday Bollywood heroine. You’d hardly ever hear anything about her much less see her. She does not give interviews to the press. She does not appear (even in passing) on television.

Blast from the past
Joginder Tuteja
I
T was all about looking into the future for Bollywood with films like Aa Dekhen Zara, 13 B and Kal Kissne Dekha hitting the screens in the recent times. But now it is flashback time and forthcoming movies will see popular actors exploring the times that have gone by.

Two faces of a city
The story of Hyderabad, the centre of nawabi culture in the south, is the story of change that many cities of the country are experiencing today. Fatima Chowdhury writes about an evocative book on the city
I
N the heart of old Hyderabad City, the Charminar, surrounded by four intricately carved minarets, has stood majestically for more than 400 years, silently witnessing the passage of time. In complete contrast, the new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport near Shamshabad is about 22 km from Hyderabad City and just about a few months old.
