PM to G8, G5 nations: Tell Pak to shed terror

Pakistan should take credible action against perpetrators of Mumbai terror attack, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said today disclosing that he asked G8, G5 members to “put pressure” on it to shed the path of terrorism and choose friendship with India.

Move on nuclear trade surprises India
New Delhi, July 11
Though surprised, India is not unduly perturbed at this stage over the G-8 countries’ move to adopt a joint statement on non-proliferation, vowing to ban the transfer of enrichment and reprocessing (ENR) technology to countries which have not signed the controversial nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).

Army court sacks woman officer
Chandigarh, July 11
In the first instance of its kind in the Army, a general court martial (GCM) has dismissed a woman officer from service for alleged professional impropriety. Capt Poonam Kaur of the Army Service Corps had faced 10 charges under various Sections of the Army Act for disobedience of lawful command, acts unbecoming of an officer, levelling false accusations and intent to defraud.

Security up in Jodhpur
Jaipur, July 11
Jodhpur has been put on a high alert following intelligence inputs regarding a possible terror strike in the city. The move came after the Jammu and Kashmir police unfolded a plot, hinting at terror threat to the city.

Achuthanandan set to face action

The all-powerful central committee of the CPM met in the capital today to take a final view on the issue of disunity in the party’s embattled Kerala unit. India’s future population could be much more than what is currently estimated. The latest demographic projections by the Population Foundation of India (PFI) and the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), US, predict that India may have a population of two billion by 2101.

Kahlon said most MLAs did not know the do’s and don’ts even after attending the Vidhan Sabha sessions for three years. “I think a training camp for them is desirable”.
