Says Pakistan-based groups may target politicians

The government has received inputs from intelligence agencies suggesting that Pakistan-based terrorist groups could target top political leaders in the run up to and during the Lok Sabha elections.

Authoritative sources confirmed to The Tribune that Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami has written a note of dissent in the case of Congress party President Sonia Gandhi receiving the Order of Leopold, a civilian honour, in Belgium.

Meghalaya Assembly suspended
Guwahati, March 18
The Union Cabinet today imposed President’s Rule in Meghalaya but decided to keep the Assembly in suspended animation. The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the first since he went through a successful by-pass surgery.

The Election Commission has directed that all rallies of BJP’s Pilibhit candidate Varun Gandhi be video tracked and also served notices on him and the BJP over the alleged hate speeches made by the Gandhi scion.

India has not seen any evidence on the grounds suggesting that the Pakistan army has cut off its links with the Taliban or other terrorist groups.
