“Slumdog Millionaire” was the correct answer at the Oscars on Sunday night not once, not twice but eight times. The Hollywood adaptation of a story about a Mumbai slum kid who goes all the way to win the top prize in a popular TV game show swept the 81st Academy Awards in Los Angeles and gave Indian composer AR Rahman two coveted golden statuettes.

Taliban free Pak official in exchange for militants

Taliban who had kidnapped a top civil official in the restive Swat valley in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), released him only in exchange for two militants, raising question marks over a peace deal stuck between hardline religious group and the government.

Putting to rest the ongoing political wrangling over the candidature for the Ludhiana parliamentary seat, Sukhbir Badal, president of the SAD, today announced the name of Gurcharan Singh Galib as the SAD-BJP candidate for the seat.

“Terrorism is ‘haraam’ in Islam and this has been reiterated time and again by us,” said Maulana Margoobur Rehman, Chancellor of the famous Islamic seminary Darul Uloom in an exclusive interview, here today. The ailing 92-year-old Maulana, one of the most respected scholars in the sub-continent, was at pains to know about the demand of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to declare India as ‘Darul Aman’ (land of peace) in order to curb terrorism.
